murkowski has conceded the republican primary giving conservative joe miller the victory. kelly o'connell is nbc's capitol hill correspondent now with the latest. kelly, there's always talk of the palin effect. here's a case where sarah palin endorsed the underdog. of course, this is alaska. >> reporter: well, when i talked to people there, they say sarah palin retains a lot of homegrown support in alaska and many say she made a difference for joe miller. so here's the situation. this could be the biggest upset of the year. i think you can make a strong case for that. joe miller is an attorney, 43 years old, married with eight children, and he is very conservative. lisa murkowski, the daughter of a huge family of alaska politics. her father and she held the senate seat for the majority of alaska's statehood. think about that for a second, a huge dynasty. and she has been defeated. part of what makes this standout is senator murkowski was ahead in the polls. and joe miller pulled out a squeaker. late in the evening, east coast time, senator murkowski called him, conceded and spoke
